Airport Improvement: FedEx Doubles Down on Cargo Handling Capacity with New Facility at Detroit Metro

The new FedEx cargo ramp facility, housed at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW), was profiled in the September 2025 edition of Airport Improvement. Ghafari provided comprehensive architectural and sort system design for seven structures, totaling more than 350,000 SF. The facility has allowed for seamless integration of operations while also bolstering Detroit’s position in both national and global logistics efforts. FedEx’s new facility spans 75 acres and includes four buildings.

Ghafari designed the main operations building, administration and support center, ground support equipment maintenance building, electrical power generation installation, aircraft deicing facility, and multiple canopies for equipment coverage on site.
Sustainability played a pivotal role in the project, with energy efficient systems, environmentally conscious materials, and natural lighting incorporated throughout the design. John Nimry, Senior Aviation Architect at Ghafari, noted that utilizing natural light not only reduced lighting loads throughout the facility but also provides employees with a more comfortable, open workspace.

This project reflects FedEx’s commitment to both strengthening Detroit as a cargo and logistics hub and maintaining a long-term presence at DTW and the surrounding community.
