Q+A with Tyaira Wilson, VDC Specialist II (Birmingham, Alabama)
How do you describe your job to people outside of the industry?
I usually tell people that my job is like being the bridge between design and construction. As a VDC Specialist, I use advanced 3D modeling tools and virtual coordination to help project teams visualize, plan, and build smarter. I help make sure that what we design on paper actually works in the real world, before construction even starts.
Why did you decide to become a Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) Specialist?
I’ve always had a passion for technology and problem solving, and VDC sits right at the intersection of both. I was drawn to the idea of transforming how we design and build by using innovation and digital tools to eliminate field changes, reduce risk, and improve collaboration. It’s rewarding to know that the work I do helps projects run more efficiently and with fewer surprises in the field.
How would you describe life at Ghafari?
Life at Ghafari is collaborative, fast-paced, and full of opportunities to grow. You’re surrounded by people who are passionate about what they do, and there’s a real culture of support and innovation. Whether you’re new to the field or a seasoned professional, there’s always something to learn and someone willing to share their knowledge.
What is the most exciting thing that has happened during your time here?
Being featured in the employee spotlight has definitely been a highlight. It is an honor to be recognized for the work I love doing. But beyond that, I’d say the most exciting moment was seeing a large-scale coordination effort that I led directly move from vision to reality. It was a proud moment knowing our digital planning had real-world impact.
What is a key idea or lesson you have learned while working at Ghafari?
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the power of collaboration. No matter how advanced the technology is, success ultimately depends on people working together and communicating effectively. VDC has taught me that the best results come from breaking down obstacles and involving all stakeholders early in the process.
How do you like to spend your free time?
In my free time, I like to stay creative and active. I enjoy exploring different landmarks and staying up to date with tech trends. I’m also a big fan of sport activities, whether it’s cross fit, pickleball, or just learning new games.
