Q+A with Rabia Yildirim, Architect / Assistant Project Manager (Istanbul, Turkey)

How do you describe your job to people outside of industry?

I help turn complex design ideas into coordinated, buildable projects. My work focuses on international aviation and industrial developments, where I collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across different countries. Sitting at the intersection of design and engineering, my role is to ensure that every discipline works together seamlessly from concept through construction.

Why did you decide to become an architect?

My interest in architecture started with drawing. What began as a creative passion grew into a fascination with how spaces are designed, built, and experienced. Architecture felt like the perfect balance between art and engineering, allowing me to combine creativity with technical problem-solving while creating places that people use every day.

How would you describe life at Ghafari?

Life at Ghafari is fast-paced, collaborative, and constantly evolving. Working on complex projects alongside talented people from different disciplines and cultures means there is always something new to learn. What I value most is Ghafari’s commitment to innovation and the trust you’re given early on, which really pushes you to grow both technically and professionally. The most rewarding environments are the ones that never stop challenging you to grow.

What is the most exciting thing that has happened during your time here?

One of the most exciting parts of my journey has been contributing to large-scale aviation and industrial developments around the world, particularly projects driven by advanced digital delivery and BIM. Ghafari’s commitment to innovation and cutting-edge digital workflows has given me the opportunity to build on the expertise I developed during my master’s studies while being involved from the earliest design stages through coordination and delivery. Seeing those ideas evolve into fully coordinated, buildable facilities has been both professionally fulfilling and incredibly rewarding. There’s something especially rewarding about seeing a complex idea evolve into a facility that will serve people for years to come.

What is a key idea or lesson you have learned while working at Ghafari?

One key lesson I’ve learned is the importance of coordination and communication. No matter how strong a design is, its success depends on how well different disciplines align. Understanding different perspectives and working collaboratively is what ultimately makes a project successful.

How do you like to spend your free time?

Outside of work, I enjoy an active lifestyle and spending time outdoors. Whether it is skiing in the winter, playing volleyball, or swimming during Istanbul’s summers, being in nature is how I recharge. I also love traveling and exploring new places. Drawing has been a passion of mine since childhood and was the spark that led me to architecture. Most importantly, I enjoy spending quality time with my friends and family.
