Q+A with Dongsoo Jang, VDC Specialist (Chicago)
How do you describe your job to people outside of the industry?
I act as the “digital conductor” for a complex orchestra of architects, engineers, clients, and builders.
My role is to harmonize their efforts by helping them create a single, comprehensive virtual 3D model of the building. I focus on empowering every team member to master these advanced design programs, transforming their collective vision into a flawless digital blueprint. By reviewing this model, I guide the team in identifying and resolving potential clashes, ensuring the final design is perfectly coordinated. This proactive approach not only saves significant time and money during the design phase but also guarantees the actual construction is efficient and free of costly surprises.
Why did you decide to become a VDC Specialist?
My journey into this profession has been one of evolution. Initially, I was drawn to architecture by the sheer creative force of designing beautiful, impactful spaces. While I was deeply passionate about the field as I studied and began my career, I eventually came to a significant realization: my greatest talents were not in creating the initial design but in understanding and refining the complex processes behind it.
Rather than abandoning a field I loved, I sought a role that would better align with my strengths. I discovered that I thrive on empowering people through collaboration and mentorship, and I have a deep curiosity for deconstructing problems to find not just solutions, but also the core reasons behind them.
The role of a VDC Specialist became the perfect synthesis of these passions. It allows me to remain at the heart of the architectural world, contributing not as a traditional designer, but as a strategic facilitator and problem solver—the digital conductor who ensures that a brilliant vision can become a flawless reality.
