GM Wallace Battery Cell Innovation Center Receives ALA Award of Merit

The Ghafari-designed General Motors Wallace Battery Cell Innovation Center was honored by the Association of Licensed Architects (ALA), receiving a Merit award at the ALA’s 2023 Design Awards celebration on October 20.

The Wallace Battery Cell Innovation Center – a first-of-its-kind facility located at GM’s historic Technical Center campus in Warren, Michigan – expands the automaker’s battery cell technology operations and is accelerating the development and commercialization of longer range, more affordable EV batteries.

Ghafari provided full-service architecture and interior design solutions for the two-story, 300,800 SF building, which supports the manufacturing, testing, and logistics of battery cell production. The design provides for an innovative, flexible facility in a quickly evolving industry.

The building’s sleek, dynamic profile draws inspiration from GM’s recent re-brand and new logo while respecting the context of Eero Saarinen’s original Tech Center design. The flexibility and modularity of the building’s integrated design allows for variation and growth through changing times.
