Q+A with Jashan Lobana, Mechanical Engineer (Dearborn)

How do you describe your job to people outside of the industry?

I describe my job as that of a problem solver who specializes in designing mechanical systems for buildings that includes HVAC, piping, fire protection, and building controls. These mechanical systems help make the buildings functional, habitable, productive, and safe. I work closely with the stakeholders of a project (clients, consultants, contractors, etc.) to offer the best possible solution that is functional, economical, and meets the client’s requirements.

Why did you decide to become an engineer?

As a kid, I was curious to know how and why things worked the way they did, which made me interested in learning science and applying it to find solutions to problems. I come from a family of engineers and doctors, which further motivated me to become one and contribute to the society in my own way. I have always been an analytical thinker, and I tend to use critical thinking and problem solving skills; therefore, engineering seemed to be the perfect fit for me.

How would you describe life at Ghafari?

Busy and fast paced.

What is the most exciting thing that has happened during your time here?

During my time at Ghafari, I’ve had some opportunities to travel for work and learned a lot of knowledgeable things along the way. I have met and worked with a lot of talented and brilliant female engineers, which has empowered me to make a difference in this profession and encourage young girls to become engineers.

I worked primarily on site at my previous job to oversee construction of mission-critical facilities. It has been a good experience to learn the design and engineering side of things to get a complete picture.

What is a key idea or lesson you have learned while working at Ghafari?

Learn to work individually and with a team. Every individual brings something to the table and should not be discounted, as one person cannot do it all. It is very important to know the strengths of your team members in order to function cohesively as a team to achieve common goals.

How do you like to spend your free time?

I like to travel and would love to travel the world one country at a time. I like to dance, go on hikes and bike rides, and enjoy doing outdoor activities, especially during summer. I am a big movie buff and I pretty much enjoy all movie genres. I am a space nerd and am beyond excited to be experiencing the onset of the commercial space age.
