Q+A with Christina Bliss

Senior Interior Designer, Dearborn

How do you describe your job to people outside of the industry?

I describe it as more than just decorating. I help to make interior spaces better for the people that use them.

Why did you decide to become an interior designer?

I decided to become an interior designer because I felt I was constantly going places that did not consider how occupants felt when in the space; or some that did. Seeing failures and successes inspired me to want to be a part of creating the types of places where people want to be. When one goes to a restaurant or to the doctor (or wherever), they should feel comfortable in those spaces. The built environment should be more welcoming to people.

How would you describe life at Ghafari?

I enjoy the culture at Ghafari. It is the largest firm I have worked for and there are lots of opportunities to interact with others. People are friendly and collaborative. So when something challenging comes up, help is only a desk away.

What is the most exciting thing that has happened during your time here?

There have been a few exciting moments – which is just circumstantial (the nature of the business). However, I have had the opportunity to work in markets I have not worked in before. Working with our corporate clients and being challenged to design for the future – circumstances that don’t even exist yet. Many clients are looking ahead and asking Ghafari to design for environments on the horizon. Trying to forecast this is extremely exciting – designing to accommodate the comforts and conveniences clients are familiar with while providing advances and resources they don’t even know exist yet.

What is a key idea or lesson you have learned while working at Ghafari?

The value of teamwork. While I feel like I have always been a team player, Ghafari takes it to the next level. Working on very large, fast-tracked projects, I have learned, very quickly, the value of those around me. Co-workers are always helpful and willing to lend a hand.

How do you like to spend your free time?

Traveling, even if it’s being a hometown tourist. Knitting, if I can ever find more than 10 minutes. Cooking. I love flexing my culinary muscles; small as they are, I know my way around the kitchen! Renovating. My husband and I are on our second major home renovation. Call me a glutton for punishment, but we can’t seem to not resist those ‘diamonds in the rough’.
