CAM Magazine Outstanding Construction Projects: GM Factory ZERO

General Motors’ Factory ZERO – the automaker’s flagship assembly plant in their journey to an all-electric future – was included in the CAM Magazine October Special Issue featuring 12 outstanding construction projects in Michigan. The massive facility, which sits in both Detroit and Hamtramck, Michigan, represents a major step forward in advancing the future of electric vehicles, sustainability, and advanced manufacturing.

Working in partnership with Walbridge on the design-build project, Ghafari provided full architecture and engineering services for the 3.5 million SF facility with the goal of minimizing its environmental impact. The project involved a 268,000 SF expansion and renovation of the existing 1 million SF body shop, a 25,000 SF addition and renovation of the 1.5 million SF general assembly shop, and a new 54,000 SF battery storage shop. The scope also included a 77,000 SF addition to GM’s electric vehicle shop and a 91,000 SF motor position switch expansion, plus a 128,000 SF battery assembly space.

Seamless teamwork between the project partners allowed the massive-scale project to be delivered on schedule for GM. Read the full CAM Magazine article – “Factory ZERO: Advancing GM’s Zero-Crashes, Zero-Emissions, and Zero-Congestion Future” – here.
