In response to the needs of the modern workforce, the Varnum Law team desired an updated design for their multi-floor Grand Rapids offices overlooking the Grand River and city skyline. The design needed to create a more collaborative environment while maintaining the standards of their established traditions.
The Ghafari team conducted multiple programming and planning sessions with Varnum’s stakeholders to understand the culture, identify underutilized space, and plan for the future needs of their unique workforce. The result is an inviting space that takes advantage of natural light by opening up the spine of the building through each floor plate.
The entire office received refreshed lighting, refinished walls and flooring, and updated restrooms. Nine teaming rooms were added to the office along with more social amenities, including a putting green, shuffleboard table, café, and gathering spaces. The entire office received technological upgrades to easily transition from in-office to remote work and offer continuity between their other offices.
The large reception and conferencing floor at the top of the high-rise building creates a polished, hospitable, and client-forward experience. The design capitalized on the multiple outdoor spaces with rooftop patios overlooking the city and improvements that included a shade pergola, accent lighting, and planters with bench seating.
