UNDERSTANDING THE CHALLENGE

This new-build project involved the transformation of the site of an old burned-down litho plant, into a multi-family development that would become an access point for the popular Eastown neighborhood in Grand Rapids. This location is geared towards tenants traveling to and from the neighboring Aquinas College or downtown Grand Rapids. Given the development’s position in a popular neighborhood, our challenge was to conceptualize a thoughtful design that would blend well into the surrounding environment, while still offering modern amenities.

TAILORING THE SOLUTION

This multi-family project consists of two buildings, containing studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, totaling 47 units. The first building is a three-story apartment building, in which the first floors are row-style walk-up apartments with private front porches. The second building is four stories, with three levels of apartments with balconies positioned above retail and restaurant space. Our design deliberately serves as a continuation of the existing residential neighborhood in which it is located.

SUPPORTING WHAT MATTERS

With the complex’s placement on the north side of the popular Eastown neighborhood, residents enjoy nearby access to restaurants and other retail developments. Ground-floor retail spaces include a restaurant, salon, home decor store, and a boutique. Both buildings are clad in brick with decorative cast stone banding to blend well with the distinguished character of the surrounding neighborhood.
