A major step forward in advancing the future of electric vehicles.

Overview

Built at the site of the former Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant, Factory ZERO is General Motors’ flagship assembly plant in their journey to an all-electric future. Working in partnership with Walbridge on the design-build project, we designed the 3.5 million SF facility with the goal of minimizing its environmental impact. The plant will ultimately produce 270,000 vehicles annually.

Supporting What Matters

EV production on a massive scale.

The project included a 268,000 SF expansion and renovation of the existing 1 million SF body shop, a 25,000 SF addition and renovation of the 1.5 million SF general assembly shop, and a new 54,000 SF battery storage shop. The scope also includes a 77,000 SF addition to GM’s electric light commercial vehicle shop and a 91,000 SF motor position switch expansion. A critical step in GM’s commitment to using 100% renewable energy, the completed factory utilizes solar carports and a 516-kilowatt ground-mounted solar panel array.
