In order to provide student-athletes and staff with more comfortable accommodations before and after games and practices, the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) embarked on a major upgrade of their women’s basketball team locker room. With these enhancements, they sought to deliver a space that complemented the recently renovated men’s basketball locker room, helping to unify the University’s basketball program. They selected the Ghafari team to provide architectural and engineering services for the locker room renovation.

The renovated space includes a modified entrance, new cherry veneer wood lockers, a nutrition station, new kitchenette and storage areas, showers with individual compartmentalization, technology upgrades, and enhanced technological and presentation capabilities. The space also provides a 70-inch television and incorporates upgraded finishes throughout. The MEP infrastructure was modified to accommodate the newly revamped space, including system adjustments to offer better clearance in height within the space.

Renovations were completed in time for the fast approaching basketball season and within budget.

The upgraded locker room provides a supportive and comfortable environment where current players can properly prepare for games and practices as well as decompress afterwards. This revived space also serves as a strong recruitment tool for potential team members.
