Schoolcraft College was founded to offer transformational learning experiences that provide their students with the skills they need to pursue careers in their fields of choice, including culinary arts. Schoolcraft wanted to build a world-class learning environment for their culinary arts program while establishing a unique venue that would facilitate partnerships between the school, local businesses, and the surrounding community. They decided to renovate and expand their existing Waterman Campus building that, when completed, would serve as a place of gathering, a social hub of the college, and a training ground for the next generation of culinary professionals.

We worked closely with Schoolcraft to develop a design solution that marries the variety of functions contained within the building to deliver a cohesive, well-operating, and modern facility that would henceforth be known as the VisTaTech Center.

The project’s first phase involved the design of the building addition housing a state-of-the-art teaching and demonstration kitchen, a full-service restaurant, a 300-seat theatre-style auditorium, an 8,000 SF multi-purpose room, and a business development center complete with computer labs, classrooms, and office areas. In the second phase, we designed a renovation of the original building, which hadn’t been updated since its original construction in the 1960s. Our design upgrades its existing production kitchen, which serves approximately 500 students per day, along with its 380-seat student cafeteria, including the food service lines and seating area.

The project was phased to enable food production for the student cafeteria to take place in the new teaching kitchen during construction of the building renovation, allowing Schoolcraft to keep the popular center operational throughout the school year.

Thanks to a collaborative effort with Schoolcraft, the VisTaTech Center is a technology-rich venue for innovative learning and a fine home for the school’s acclaimed culinary arts program.
