Dearborn Public Schools has a longstanding mission of working in partnership with the community to provide their students with a high-quality education within a safe and stimulating environment. As part of a $150 million bond program, they decided to construct a combined elementary and middle school that would accommodate 1,200 students and represent the largest addition to the school system in over a decade.

We worked closely with the school district and an architectural partner to develop a building that houses a variety of learning spaces, creating a dynamic environment where a wide range of students can grow and thrive.

The 184,000 SF school features approximately 50 classrooms, along with a gymnasium with locker room accommodations for students of various ages, a competitive swimming pool, and special-purpose classrooms for music and art education. Our design also provides a large commons area with an adjacent full-service kitchen that serves as a central community hub of the school, functioning as a lunchroom and a venue for special events and performances.

Of particular importance to the school district was ample outdoor space that encourages physical activity. Our design of the 12-acre site accommodates play areas for upper-elementary and lower-elementary classes, along with a running track and soccer and baseball fields.

The result of a collaborative effort between our team, our architectural partner, and the school district, the McCollough-Unis School embodies the mission of Dearborn Public Schools, offering an engaging learning environment for students in a formative period of development.
