UNDERSTANDING THE CHALLENGE

MAS-GMR Aerospace Engineering Company, a joint venture between Malaysian Aerospace Engineering and GMR Aero Technic, decided to construct a state-of-the-art aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad, India. They initiated this venture to offer third-party aircraft maintenance services to international carriers at one of the country’s busiest airports while enhancing trade relations between India and Malaysia. We collaborated with client stakeholders to develop a highly functional complex that efficiently serves a wide variety of aircraft for an international clientele while establishing MAS-GMR’s position as a leading third-party provider of aircraft MRO services.

TAILORING THE SOLUTION

Working closely with MAS-GMR, we provided comprehensive architecture and engineering services for the 36,000 SM MRO facility, which offers heavy maintenance capabilities for narrow- and wide-body aircraft from around the world along with a paint hangar. The five maintenance lines can accommodate one 747-8 and three A320s or five A320s simultaneously. Additional program components include technical and administrative office areas, meeting and training rooms, workshops, customer offices, and other support areas.

The 11-hectare project complex is also home to a security building, canteen facility, central utility plant, and a hazardous materials storage building. The campus also accommodates covered vehicle parking, which required site regrading and updated site utility infrastructure.

SUPPORTING WHAT MATTERS

With this ultramodern MRO facility now in operation, airline operators across the globe can reduce their fleet repair and maintenance costs in the region. The complex is the first of this scale, scope, and quality in South Asia’s private sector and is a landmark for India’s aviation industry.
