UNDERSTANDING THE CHALLENGE

Continuing their facilities growth at Dallas / Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), American Airlines (American) pursued the expansion and renovation of the Terminal E satellite concourse. American’s intention was to convert the existing nine-gate independent concourse into a 15-gate dedicated regional jet operation. The number of flights of American’s ERJ and CRJ regional fleet has increased and this conversion allows the airline to consolidate their regional operations in a cost-effective way. Ghafari supported American’s evolution and development by providing architecture and engineering services for this fast-track project.

TAILORING THE SOLUTION

To accommodate growing passenger volumes, our design included the addition of six contact gates, reconfiguration and modernization of holdrooms, and improved ramp level rooms, such as break rooms and stores and maintenance areas, to support American’s various user groups. Our solution also relocated and consolidated corresponding operations, personnel offices, and support spaces with the regional gates at the concourse and mezzanine levels of the building.

We completed the project using the integrated project delivery (IPD) method, teaming early with American and our construction partners. This approach has enabled us to expedite effective discovery, scope definition, design, and implementation of the required work in order to meet the aggressive implementation schedule of just under 13 months. Following the design, we also provided full commissioning services for the complete mechanical, electrical, and IT systems.

SUPPORTING WHAT MATTERS

Through our integrated approach, we created a space that improves American’s customer travel experience while enhancing their employees’ work environment. These concourse modifications also modernize the terminal’s public spaces, further strengthening American’s service offerings at one of their largest hubs.
