Q+A with Molly Morgan, Specifications Writer (Dearborn)
How do you describe your job to people outside of the industry?
Everyone knows that architects create drawings. I write manuals that go to the contractor alongside the drawings to set technical requirements and standards for materials and installation.
Why did you decide to go into spec writing?
While working in construction administration at my first firm, I witnessed the importance of things coming together well during construction, and the difference getting the technical aspects right during design makes in the final quality of a project. At this time, I learned how much the specifications contribute to project success. I really enjoy getting into the nitty-gritty and crafting precision writing. Specification writing turned out to be an ideal combination of what I bring to the table with my own capabilities, plus opportunities to learn and be challenged.
