Q+A with Sean Ruwart, Electrical Engineer

How do you describe your job to people outside of the industry?

I usually tell people to look around right where they’re standing and notice all of the devices within a building that require power to function. I design the electrical infrastructure that makes those devices function properly while ensuring the safety of everyone utilizing those devices.

Why did you decide to become an engineer?

In high school, I was on the fence between architecture and engineering as my career choice. However, when I took physics in my senior year, I became fascinated with the laws of electromagnetism and electricity. Super nerdy, I know. A career in this industry was a perfect match for me.

How would you describe life at Ghafari?

I like to describe Ghafari as having a “work hard, play hard” attitude. Ghafari has a very social atmosphere with many opportunities to enjoy the company of your colleagues. On the other hand, Ghafari consists of hard-working, dedicated employees who understand that the social aspects of the workplace are a reward for the demanding work we all put in.

What is the most exciting thing that has happened during your time at Ghafari?

Ghafari has given me many opportunities to travel, and I have made the most of those opportunities. My most exciting trip was spending three months working in India. It was an enlightening experience, and I would definitely take a trip back for a personal vacation.

What is a key idea or lesson you have learned while working at Ghafari?

Ask questions, never assume.

How do you like to spend your free time?

I enjoy staying active in the summer - running, golfing, Kan-Jamming. If you don’t know what Kan-Jam is, you should look it up, it’s amazing. I’m also trying to whittle down my endless list of “Chicago restaurants that I want to try”. In the winter, I spend my free time thinking about summer.
