Q+A with Farah Anoni

Mechanical Engineer, Dearborn

How do you describe your job to people outside of the industry?

I design and engineer mechanical systems – HVAC, piping, plumbing, and fire protection – to provide an environment that protects the building structure, creates safe and healthy surroundings for the occupants, and allows the building to be functional and habitable. I work daily with architects, electrical and structural engineers to combine all building systems into an integrated whole.

Why did you decide to become an engineer?

I come from a family of engineers and architects who inspired me along the way to pursue engineering as a career path. As a kid, my aunt, who is an architect, used to take me with her to her office where I would see architects and engineers standing behind drafting boards drawing buildings on papers with pencils. She would give me crayons and papers to practice while there. That made me curious to learn how buildings are designed, how they function, and why they do not fall. I’ve always imagined myself becoming one of them in the future, so I studied architectural engineering. I completed my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in architectural engineering with an emphasis on mechanical systems.

How would you describe life at Ghafari?

Collaborative, friendly, gratifying, professional, and rewarding.

What is the most exciting thing that has happened during your time here?

I have been fortunate to work with intelligent and very experienced engineers who have helped me advance my design and engineering skills. During my time at Ghafari, I’ve had the opportunity to work on different project types, including automotive industrial plants and dealerships, mixed use, healthcare, and more. Every project has been unique and challenging, but the most interesting aspect has been witnessing projects come to life. Moreover, I was able to obtain my Professional Engineering (PE) designation for the State of Michigan and LEED AP designation for building design and construction.

What is a key idea or lesson you have learned while working at Ghafari?

Teamwork and engaging different perspectives are key to produce high-quality and well-integrated projects that could exceed clients’ expectations and allow opportunities for innovative and efficient designs.

How do you like to spend your free time?

I enjoy spending my spare time with my family and friends. I am also an artist. I like to paint and explore different painting techniques. I like abstract painting as it gives the artist a chance to be creative and create a composition with a degree of independence from visual references in the world. My husband and I also like traveling and experiencing new cuisines.
