Q+A with Brandon Visser

Senior ICT + Security Designer, Chicago

How do you describe your job to people outside of the industry?

I am the person that designs the systems that make your wireless internet connection and your cable TV work.

Why did you decide to become an ICT + security designer?

I kind of fell into it as part of the technology growth in the early 1990s. I received my certifications as a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer and Certified Novell Administrator around 1998 and began working as a network engineer for a small architectural firm in the western suburbs of Chicago. As time went by, I continued providing network design to various clients, and then I decided (was challenged actually) to become a Registered Communications Distribution Designer, which is one of the highest design credentials in the information and communications technology industry.

How would you describe life at Ghafari?

I am driven to be the best at what I do, and I always want to work somewhere where I’ll have opportunities to develop my skills, take on interesting projects, and work with people I can really learn from. Some of the most innovative thinkers in the industry work here, and that’s the main reason why I chose Ghafari as the place to continue my career.

What is the most exciting thing that has happened during your time here?

I have really enjoyed participating on the Turkish Airlines project, as it is a very complex technology project. There are many aspects that are related to the complete ICT design, such as access control, closed circuit television, wireless network, and outside fiber optic transport system design, which I really enjoy doing.

What is a key idea or lesson you have learned while working at Ghafari?

Take the risk that leads you to a project that is new, a new skill, or anything that provides you with new challenges. Taking that risk has brought me to where I am today. I am a very happy, and I love what I do.

How do you like to spend your free time?

I love hockey. I played the game since I was 10. I am also into fly-fishing, fly tying, and rod building. I spend weeks each year in Northern Michigan fly-fishing for smallmouth bass, trout, and salmon.
