AviationPros: Water Storage System Design for the Turkish Airlines’ New Istanbul Airport

Authored by Ghafari’s Nick Purohit (Managing Director, India Operations) and Nikhil Dadhaniya (Mechanical Engineer), the article focuses on the plumbing challenges that our team faced and the water storage design solutions we developed for the airline’s catering facility, one of 50+ next-generation support facilities that comprise the campus.

The catering facility – which is designed to prepare 250,000 meals per day for passengers and an additional 5,000 meals per day for employees – demands storage for 1.5 days’ worth of water consumption. Our first challenge was to estimate peak water demand and the daily demand required by the variety of specialty kitchens responsible for preparing different cuisines. Working closely with Turkish Airlines (THY) engineers, we benchmarked existing facilities and concluded that a water consumption level of 2.64 gallons per meal was prudent.

We determined that the facility’s required water storage volume totals 494,000 cubic feet distributed across numerous storage tanks for raw, treated, and fire protection water. The team decided to position these storage tanks remotely in a separate water tank building. We sought to optimize this ancillary facility’s footprint and developed a 61,350 SF solution that accommodates 38 water pumps.
