Saudia Aerospace Engineering Industries (SAEI) aims to position itself as a leading third-party provider of aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul services. With the massive expansion of the King Abdulaziz International Airport, SAEI seized the opportunity to develop a world-class aircraft maintenance campus that would help them achieve this goal.

As the design arm of a multinational design-build team, we worked closely with the contractor and SAEI to design a range of specialized, technically advanced buildings for the MRO complex. When complete, it will be one of the largest campuses of its kind in the world, supporting SAEI’s operations at the airport for decades to come.

The Phase I 380,000 SM complex will provide both line and heavy maintenance operations, encompassing eight heavy maintenance hangar bays, a line maintenance hangar capable of housing three wide-body aircraft, and independent wide-body aircraft wash and paint hangars. The campus will also include extensive technical overhaul and component repair centers, a central supply chain and logistics center, along with an administrative building, mosque, ground service equipment maintenance building, five-story parking structure, and a fire protection facility.

This massive complex will be critical to SAEI’s ability to do their best to assure safe, well-maintained aircraft and components. Working in close collaboration with the client and contractor, we delivered a design for a high-performing campus that, despite its size and complexity, will operate efficiently and allow for future expansion in line with SAEI’s growth objectives. More importantly, this center of excellence in aircraft maintenance will enable the nearly 3,000 team members who ultimately work there, from maintenance technicians to administrative staff, to do their jobs well.
