Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the A. Alfred Taubman Center for Design Education is an innovative educational complex devoted to creativity. It houses a learning community focused on art and design that extends from middle school through graduate school and beyond.

The College for Creative Studies doubled the size of their campus when they opened the doors of the Taubman Center in 2009. Since then, the complex has enabled the college to make a profound impact on students, faculty, surrounding businesses, and Detroit's creative community. To increase capacity and functionality of the building, CCS decided to renovate two of its unoccupied floors to support the growing volume of students and visitors while providing a space that nurtures talent outside of a traditional classroom setting.

Working closely with CCS, we designed the renovation to create open and collaborative spaces for CCS students to take their creativity to new heights while maintaining the historic character of the building.

The residential floor features high-ceiling, loft-style dorm rooms that are approximately 500 SF each. The facility also houses “dirty room” workspaces, a community room, laundry facilities, and a fitness room. The academic floor was designed to accommodate classrooms, open office spaces, a computer lab, lounge, storage rooms, and restrooms.

We provided comprehensive architectural, engineering, and construction administration services for the renovation. With little disturbance to the other areas in the building, the facility remained fully operational throughout the project.

As a hub of innovation and creativity, the Taubman Center brings approximately 2,000 people to Detroit’s New Center district daily. The renovation of the facility will provide additional living and work spaces to allow the college's students, faculty, and visitors to thrive in a place that supports their creativity.
