Abu Dhabi International Airport is the second largest airport in the UAE and one of the fastest growing travel hubs globally. To ensure that all passengers experience world-class levels of service and comfort, the ADIA continually upgrades and expands its operations. Since 2012, we have provided essential services - comprehensive planning, architecture, and engineering - for six refurbishment / expansion projects in Terminals 1 and 3. The project criteria also included reducing energy and water consumption and the use of sustainable materials.

The current phased projects include: construction of a new bus gates building and Etihad Airways’ business-class lounge; expansion of transfer passenger screening areas; renovations to multiple aircraft stands and construction of a new gate hold room; an addition to the U.S. preclearance facility; and expansion of the baggage reclaim area.

To minimize energy usage, we developed a super-insulated building envelope in tandem with highly efficient mechanical systems and LED lighting. Passenger waiting areas use low emitting materials and afford generous views of the outdoors. We also installed low-flow and dual flush plumbing fixtures and selected recycled and regional materials.

A combination of great design and technological advances allows Abu Dhabi International Airport to meet the growing volume of its air travel and deliver an exceptional customer experience. Our client is reaping the benefits of the sustainable features we incorporated throughout the spaces. The bus gates building’s energy usage is down 27.4% compared to a baseline case and water consumption has been reduced 32%. The building achieved a Two Pearl certification from Estidama based on the Pearl Building Rating System.
