The Sultanate of Oman and Oman Air have invested in the expansion of the Salalah International Airport, which is part of a development program to further the country’s economic growth. With Salalah’s development as an international destination, the airport’s cargo operations are key to the program’s success.
We provided upfront design services for a state-of-the-art cargo center, from programming and planning through development of the tender documents for design-build contractor procurement. We collaborated closely with project stakeholders to plan a complex facility that is capable of handling large volumes of cargo efficiently and safely.
Our design for the 20,000-square-meter cargo center incorporates loading and unloading capabilities, export and import handling activities, air-to-sea and air-to-road services, and screening and customs inspection procedures. With an annual cargo capacity of 100,000 tons, the facility will accommodate Oman Air’s ground handling cargo services to other airlines and small-to-medium sized freight forwarders.
The complex will include a unit load devices handling system that contains a transfer vehicle subsystem integrated with build-up and breakdown workstations, as well as rack and bulk storage. Our design also accommodates frozen and chilled storage, secure and dangerous goods storage, bonded storage and quarantine facilities, as well as a live animal center and more than 200 vehicle parking spaces.
Following the completion of design development, we are monitoring the design-build contractor’s performance on behalf of Oman Air and the Oman Ministry of Transportation and providing full-time onsite representation during the construction phase. When complete, the project will allow Oman Air to expand their air cargo business while reinforcing Oman’s position as a travel destination in the Middle East and the world.
