With the significant commercial and economic growth in northern Colombia, the Barranquilla Ernesto Cortissoz Airport is the fastest growing airport in the country, transitioning from a connection stop into a significant international destination. To accommodate the region’s progress and improve the passenger experience, the airport required a comprehensive renovation and expansion.
As part of an engineering, procurement, and construction management team, we supported a large-scale modernization with planning, architecture, and engineering services.
With a lack of accurate, as-built documentation, we initiated the project by conducting high-definition laser scanning of the passenger terminal to establish a reliable record of the existing conditions. Our subsequent design complements the terminal’s character, which is unique for an international airport. We preserved and repaired the Paul Rudolph-inspired concrete columns while upgrading the entire insulated envelope with energy-efficient glazing. Our interior renovations opened up the terminal with ample natural lighting. As the terminal suffered from poor ventilation, our team developed a new efficient heating and cooling system to improve passenger comfort.
We also provided full design services for a new cargo facility and new FBO center as well as extensive information communication technology and security services to all facilities. As our planning services granted flexibility for future growth and development, we also offered a conceptual design for a future aircraft maintenance hangar.
Our comprehensive services will rejuvenate the near century-old Barranquilla Ernesto Cortissoz Airport, which is the first international airport in South America. The design will tie together a unifying theme for the complex, presenting a distinct, central identity. With sustainable practices and applied innovation, the airport will comply with International Civil Aviation Organization standards, meet the demands for increased passenger traffic, and advance Barranquilla’s economic development.
