The Ghafari-designed Jesse White Community Center + Field House was recently certified LEED Silver by the U.S. Green Building Council. The 30,000-square-foot facility, located in Chicago’s near north side neighborhood, serves as the headquarters for the Chicago Park District’s gymnastics program and the internationally renowned Jesse White Tumblers. The center also provides fitness and assembly rooms for members of the surrounding community.
The building features various sustainable elements that serve the objectives of energy reduction, integrated design, community contribution and carbon reduction. Solving passive and active energy efficiency problems was central to the design process. Form, orientation and building envelope were developed with the goal of reducing loads in the mechanical and electrical systems and optimizing solar access and daylight. The combination of passive and active design features allows the facility to consume 23% less energy than a comparable baseline building.
