A two-part article authored by Scott Adams, Ghafari’s Manager of Practice Technology, appeared in the October 2016 issue of Building Operating Management. Part 1 of the article, titled “Why You Should Embrace BIM for Facility Management”, discusses how Building Information Modeling (BIM) is becoming a valuable tool for lifecycle facility management and why facility management leaders are critical participants in the programming, design, and construction phases of capital projects.
“Because BIM provides instant, precise, user-friendly access to the location of building components that will require monitoring or replacement, BIM solutions will be the key to efficient facility management for the foreseeable future,” Scott writes.
He continues this discussion in Part 2 of the article, “Why BIM Is Valuable for Life-Cycle Considerations”, detailing how BIM is useful for the long-term maintenance of not only fixtures, furniture, and equipment, but also of site features, including hardscape, lighting, and non-building environment components.
“BIM information extends beyond individual buildings to the site as a whole,” he says. “With a site facility management model, you can capture information about exterior components such as generators, maintenance pads, and parking spaces. This allows the facility manager to coordinate maintenance processes for the entire campus in one place.”
