CMAP 2040 Master Plan - Reinvest Scenario

At the CTA UIC / Halsted Blue Line Station there exists a loose connection between the city (to the north) and the University of Illinois at Chicago (to the south). This precarious link if further exacerbated by the chasm that is the Eisenhower Expressway. The goal of this preserve scenario is to strengthen the connection of these two communities through the enhancement of the existing infrastructure present at this site.

The TOD [transit oriented development]  is a high-density, mixed-use development which is oriented around the blue line UIC/Halsted Stop. It is also designed to be an intermodal hub which links the vehicular commuter into the city’s mass transit system.

Landscape Urbanism the sites landscaping performs as a connecting device across the networked TOD. The landscape also provides public gathering space for various forms of activity and events. It links various communities into a wide range of events, programs,  and services to create a cohesive whole.

The “Circle” Interchange is the intersection of regional interstate highways I-90/94 and I-290.  These interstates bring high traffic volumes through the Chicago area. This high influx of traffic makes this site an optimal link between the city and the Midwest region.  The proposed design offers an automated carpark system, located above the Circle Interchange, to receive incoming traffic.  The automated carpark maximizes parking efficiency and the speed of intermodal transfer. This transfer between automobiles and various forms of mass transit reduces vehicular traffic on the city’s surface streets creating more pedestrian friendly city environment. People are then connected to the city’s mass transit systems through the TOD.

The Urban Farm/Park utilizes the roofscape of the carpark as an urban farm, producing local produce to be sold in markets at the TOD. This Urban Farm also functions as a park which connects the four corners of the city previously separated by the Circle Interchange.
