The footprint of the region will expand as undeveloped areas continue to grow, but the negative effects of this new development will be reduced by the use of conservation design and other environmental best management practices. Multi-modal transportation will be strengthened, but automobiles will continue to be primary means of travel for most regional residents. However, the environmental impacts of this behavior will be reduced by the use of alternative fuels, more efficient vehicles, and innovative design and construction techniques for roadways. Also, the transportation system will employ ITS solutions and advanced pricing to manage demand without requiring massive new infrastructure investments.
A significant drawback of the “innovate” scenario is that it relies on technological advances that are beyond the region’s control.
With the rapid advancement of technology, the city and university will continue to lead the way in innovation, where sustainable design and practices are the standard. Within this frame of mind, the Innovate scenario furthers the desire to connect the West Loop and University of Illinois at Chicago communities. Around the central core of the CTA Blue Line Station, the Eisenhower expressway is built over, stretching land physically between the North and South.
Increased Density is the key to maintaining the vitality, stability, and security of the site. With the introduction of wide spread mixed-use development, the community will occupy this new land and activate the area. New commercial, residential, retail, and hospitality opportunities make the site a destination and not simply a transient location.
The Energy Hub rises over the expressway circle interchange, and will employ energy harvesting technologies throughout the building to provide energy to the site and its surroundings. The most prominent feature is the smooth, narrow forms of the spires that direct wind through turbines installed vertically along each tower.
The Transportation Hub spans the length of this new land, over the CTA Blue Line. As a gateway to the city, it is the ideal location for the exchange of modes of transportation, where cars are parked and a variety of different transit options, such as train, bus, segway, bicycle are available.
