Fire Protection Designer D2 - Chicago, Dearborn, Indianapolis
Design various types of fire protection and safety features including fire alarm and sprinkler systems for a variety of commercial structures, including aviation, aircraft hangars, government, stadiums, hospitals, hotels, institutional and military. Analyze building and fire codes in coordination with the structural design.
Primary Responsibilities
- Specific knowledge and experience with fuel fire suppression and commercial or military aircraft hangar fire protection systems.
- Possess / demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the fundamentals of fire protection design, including suppression systems and fire alarms.
- Extensive knowledge of fire protection equipment and distribution systems (sprinkler and standpipe mains / branches, fire and jockey pumps, etc.).
- Possess / demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of construction documents, fire suppression and alarm systems for commercial structures, life safety code compliance and conduct risk assessments.
- Review building designs for fire code compliance.
- Plan review of life safety, fire suppression and fire alarm.
- Possess / demonstrate extensive working knowledge of work efforts required by other Project-related trades (Architectural, Structural, Civil, etc.).
- Able to supervise production of documents depicting these systems using AutoCAD or Microstation, while strictly following in-house CAD standards.
- Able to accurately produce (in an organized and easily readable fashion) the required calculations, and assemble and organize such into the project manual.
- Write compliance and fire protection reports, if needed.
- Able to self-train (outside of office hours) to advance in areas needing improvement.
- Participate independently in client contact (attend meetings, accomplish both oral and written communications, etc.).
- Establish project scope, budget, and necessary constraints and design approach relative to project manager / client requirements.
- Prepare feasibility studies and cost estimates.
- Conduct field measuring and checking at the construction site.
- Conduct code reviews.
- Review of documents for accuracy, completeness, and code compliance with standards and codes.
- Prepare specifications, using in-office word processing software.
- Review of product submittals (shop drawings) for design content, determination of action to be taken to reach specification compliance.
- Use in-office software, prepare project file updates, transmittals, letters, reports, requests for reproduction services, etc.
- Coordinate mechanical trade efforts with other disciplines.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree Fire Protection Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
- Professional Registration preferred.
- CFPS Certified Fire Protection Specialist a plus.
- 10 + years or more related and progressively more responsible experience in fire protection systems design and mechanical engineering.
Additional Skills
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, 3D, Microstation, Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer.
