Detroit Metro Airport North Terminal Wins AIA Michigan Honor Award

The North Terminal at the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport recently received an AIA Michigan Honor Award, a juried design award that recognizes projects for creativity, diversity and architectural excellence. The jury, comprised of recognized architects from outside of Michigan, evaluated submissions on the following criteria: demonstration of exemplary skill and sensitivity; resolution of formal, functional and technical requirements; and the advancement of a contemporary understanding of design with new approaches to the development of architectural form.

The North Terminal project was recognized for its ability to provide passengers with an enhanced travel experience while providing efficiency gains for the airlines. Completed in 2008, the North Terminal replaced the outdated LC Smith Terminal and consists of 26 contact gates. The project was completed on an aggressive four-year schedule, far below the cost of many similar post-9/11 terminals built in the US.

Ghafari teamed with Gensler, Hamilton Anderson Associates, Scales and Associates, and Walbridge / Barton Malow on the $431 million project, providing architecture and engineering services.
